Workers’ Compensation Lawyers in Nashville
Helping Injured Workers for Nearly Two Decades
People who are injured at work or while carrying out duties that fall under the scope of their employment are often entitled to receive workers’ compensation benefits. Workers’ compensation is a system that is designed to help injured workers who are temporarily or permanently unable to work. Workers’ compensation benefits can be used for the cost of medical treatment and to assist with lost wages and/or income when a person’s injuries prevents him or her from securing gainful employment.
The process of filing a workers’ compensation claim can be very complicated and, unfortunately, many rightful claims are denied. At Jeff Roberts & Associates, PLLC, we have extensive experience with Tennessee workers’ compensation law. Our Nashville workers’ compensation lawyers can help you with any aspect of your claim, from initial filing to appealing a denied claim.

Do You Qualify for Workers’ Compensation?
In Tennessee, any work-related injury or illness that requires medical treatment, requires an employee to take time off work, or results in an employee’s death is covered under workers’ compensation law. This includes injuries incurred during the scope of employment, meaning that the injury occurred while the employee was doing something required by his or her work, whether or not it took place in the actual workplace. For instance, if any employee is required to travel for work and is subsequently injured while traveling, he or she may have a valid workers’ compensation claim.
You may qualify for workers’ compensation if you suffered any of the following common workplace injuries:
- Slips and falls
- Repetitive motion injuries
- Strained muscles
- Being hit by falling objects
- Burns
- Cuts and lacerations
- Broken bones
- Toxic fume inhalation
- Hearing or vision loss
- Accidental amputation
This list is not comprehensive. Workplace injuries are as vast and varied as the many different industries and workplaces in Tennessee and throughout the nation. Similarly, workplace accidents can occur in a variety of ways and for numerous reasons. A construction worker may fall from unsafe scaffolding that did not meet standard safety requirements. A commercial truck driver may be involved in an accident caused by another driver. An office employee may develop debilitating carpal tunnel syndrome after repeated typing. A restaurant worker may slip and fall on an unmarked wet floor. The risk of workplace accidents is high, and a worker can become injured in countless ways.
How to File a Workers’ Compensation Claim in Tennessee
If you are injured or become ill at work or while carrying our workplace duties, it’s important that you report your injuries to your supervisor right away. By law, you must notify your employer of your injuries within 15 days (calendar days, not work days) from the date you knew of or reasonably should have known of the injury.
Your employer is then required to complete the Tennessee Employer’s First Report of Work Injury or Illness Form C-20 within one day of you reporting the injury. This form is used to notify your employer’s insurance company of your workers’ compensation claim. The insurance company will then either accept or deny your claim within 15 days.
What Happens if Your Workers’ Compensation Claim Is Denied?
Workers’ compensation claims are denied for a myriad of reasons, some just and others unjust. If your claim is denied, you will be notified of the reason(s) for the denial.
Some common reasons workers’ compensation claims are denied include:
- The injury/illness did not meet state guidelines
- The claim was not filed by the specified deadline
- The injury or illness is not considered “work-related”
- The claim was filed after you were no longer working for the employer in question
Of course, many times, insurance companies will list one of the above reasons as grounds to deny a claim unjustly. They may dispute that an injury occurred in the workplace even when it did. They may claim that your injury does not qualify if you do not work for the same employer because that employer illegally fired you for reporting your injury.
